Quick Answer
Slugger is a C-Tier Uncommon (30% per roll) fighting style built around the Unstable trade — you deal 30% more damage but take 10% more damage. It pairs that with the highest block piercing in the game (Guard Pierce V MAX, 30% chip) and Resilience III (45%). The catch is its extremely slow attacks, which make it a high-risk, high-reward pick best played on med-tall builds (177cm+) where the reach can make slow swings land.
Slugger Combat Combos & Mechanics
Core combo strings and heavy trade formulas:
Core Slugger Combos Breakdown
- Trade Focus: Perfect Block → M2 (30% chip + Unstable boost). Because of the slow wind-up, only commit the M2 after a confirmed block or whiff.
- Chip Pressure: M1 → M1 → pause → M1. Guard Pierce V MAX chips 30% through blocks, draining turtles even on block.
- Counter Strategy: Parry the slow swings. Slugger swings are predictable — never let the Unstable damage trade be forced on you.

ANIMATION REFERENCE
Slugger is deliberately slow and deliberately punishing: Unstable trades 10% more damage taken for 30% more dealt, so swing timing matters more here than on any other style. The official frame captures of the M1 animation sit on the official Gakuran Trello board, which is also where the perk cards below come from. We link to the board instead of mirroring the developer's animation files.
Official Trello Perks
Unstable (Unique)
Deal 30% more damage but take 10% more damage. The largest damage multiplier in the game — and the largest risk. Every exchange is a gamble you win only if you out-swing.
Guard Pierce V MAX
30% block chip damage — the highest block piercing in the entire game. Blocking Slugger still costs you 30% per hit, so turtling is not a real defense.
Resilience III
45% grapple chance. Solid grapple defense for a brawler — reasonably safe from most grabs outside of the V-tier Resilience styles.

How Slugger Fits into the Meta
Strengths
- Highest damage in the game: the 30% Unstable boost turns any landed hit into a brutal trade.
- Best block piercing: Guard Pierce V MAX makes turtling useless against you.
- Very common: 30% Uncommon pool means most players already have one to experiment with.
Weaknesses
- Extremely slow attacks: the wind-ups are the easiest parry targets in the game.
- Glass cannon: taking 10% more damage means every whiff punished is amplified.
- Loses to fast pressure: Boxing and Basic out-speed you so badly that the Unstable trade never favors you.
Best Build for Slugger
| Stat | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Med–Tall (177cm+) | The reach compensates for slow wind-ups, giving the swings a chance to land before opponents dash out. |
| Ethnicity | Middle Eastern or African | These ethnicities sweep to the med-tall height range most efficiently. |
| Playstyle | Block-chipping tank | Force blocked exchanges — V MAX chip plus Unstable drains anyone who turtles, without committing to the slow kill swings. |
Slugger vs Other Top Styles
| Style | Slugger Advantage | Slugger Disadvantage |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing | 30% chip drains Boxing's close-range block spam | Boxing's speed parries every slow Slugger swing |
| Wrestling | Unstable boosts out-trade most Wrestling exchanges | Wrestling 55% Resilience beats Slugger's 45% in grapple clashes |
| Karate | 30% more damage than Karate's steady pressure | Karate's perfect-block recovery punishes every slow swing |
How to Counter Slugger
Core counter playbooks and spacing strategies against Slugger:
- Parry on reaction: Slugger swings are the slowest in the game — easiest parry timing to exploit.
- Never trade head-on: The 10% extra damage taken means Slugger wins raw trades. Punish whiffs with spacing instead.
- Rush it down: Fast M1 styles (Boxing, Wing Chun) interrupt slow windups before they connect.
